Plaza de la Coronación (Ayamonte)

Here are 9 reasons why you shouldn’t miss out on this hidden Andalusian gem.

Our diverse landscapes: explore nature with ease

Whether you’re searching for the countryside, beach, river, marshes or a slice of the city life, Ayamonte has it all.Although the town is most famously known for its beautifully vast beaches with large expanses of sand and sea, there is so much more to discover here. For example, did you know that you can explore the Guadiana River and its surrounding areas by boat? You can take a 15-minute ferry to Portugal, take a rental boat upriver or rent a canoe and explore the neighbouring area of Isla Canela. Paddle boarding is also another good option for exploring the nearby marshes; its calm winding streams make it ideal for beginners wanting to test the waters (if you’ll pardon the pun!).

Fancy a hike? I recommend exploring the local trails leading to Villablanca where you can walk through the suburbs along the Guadiana Boulevard. There, you can have a quiet stroll along the river and enjoy breathtaking views of Castro Marim.

The sun is a work of art

Did you know that Ayamonte is inundated with talented artists? This is apparently due to the unique nature of the sunlight there, with its exceptional hues and colours. It offers artists a truly inspirational experience during their creative process.

Sunsets in Ayamonte are a spectacle which shouldn’t be missed. Depending on the time of year, the tides and wind, you will see different shades and reflections paired with vibrant skies of pink and orange; a true marvel to behold.

Train your palate to new flavors

It goes without saying that Ayamonte offers some of the best gastronomic experiences in the region. The canned fish industry has a long history in the area, so why not try some of their exquisite delicacies? Pesasur and Conservas Concepción both offer traditional as well as more innovative products.

Likewise, the town has some of the best tapas and seafood dishes. Here, you can try some unforgettable dishes, including the ‘Ayamontina’ tuna fish or fillet of skate with pepper.

We can’t talk about Ayamonte without mentioning pork, which is the star of the Huelva region. Try ‘jamon iberico’ or a mixed charcuterie board with various ham and cheeses from the region. Simply enjoy with a regional red wine to complement the rich flavours.

We have some of the best facades in the region

While in Ayamonte, it’s worth looking up and admiring the beautiful facades of the local architecture, with touches of Moorish and traditional Andalusian influence. You will notice balconies with curved shaping, as well as the windows and doors which vary from one house to another.

We’re surrounded by water

One of the most striking things about the town centre is its proximity to the water. The Guadiana river flows into the marshlands, winding its way through the town and finally crossing paths in the town centre. Also, the marina area offers stunning picturesque views of docked boats floating on the water’s surface, as well as reflections of adjacent buildings.

Apart from the sun and amazing food, the friendliness and warmth of the locals is one thing that motivates students to visit Ayamonte. For some of those students, they even decide to move to Spain permanently!

In Ayamonte, feeling welcome is not the exception to the rule. Whether it’s friends sharing a coffee in the street, or helpful shopkeepers who will try their hardest to speak English with you despite the language barrier, you can feel the optimism and generosity of the people here.

The town squares (a great meeting place for all)

You’ll find quite a few special squares throughout Ayamonte, however there are two or three main squares which are local favourites for their design and atmosphere.

Bask in the sun while taking in the raw beauty of the squares with friends and acquaintances alike. Here, not much has changed and you learn to sit and appreciate the well-preserved antiquity of the area.

We’re bike-friendly

In recent years, Ayamonte has been adopting a more cyclist-friendly approach to their transport systems, with several bike lanes being installed throughout the town and leading to the beach. It even has a brand-new cycle path along the Guadiana River, which means you can enjoy a pleasant bike ride while watching the sunset on a beautiful summer’s evening.

We know how to throw a good party

Although there are celebrations happening all year round, there are some times of the year that are more active than others.

In summer, for example, you’re able to enjoy smaller festivals which are typical in the region. Here, you can expect wonderful orchestra performances, well-organised family events and even exhibitions with local artists.
