Many people ask me: “I want to visit Ayamonte, but I don’t know exactly what or where to eat to truly experience the local cuisine.” If that’s you, don’t worry! In this post, I’ll share my favorite spots (not sponsored—just my honest opinion as a Spanish local!).

Best Tapas Bars in Ayamonte

El Costalero

For traditional and affordable tapas, this place is a must! They serve a great variety of classic fish stews and fried dishes, including “el huevo gigante”, “la pavía”, and refreshing options for hot days like seafood salad or marinated fish roe.

Tabanco La Peñita

Famous for its montaditos—small but hearty sandwiches with a crusty bread roll. My personal favorite? The cod with alioli sauce.

Bar El Paladar

If you want super cheap tapas featuring fresh local specialties, this is the spot! They bring in fish and seafood directly from the market next door. Go early! There’s always a queue, and they only open at midday for lunch.

Top Restaurants

Bar Margallo

A truly unique place—there are only three dishes on the menu: fried cuttlefish, fried fish, and seasoned tomatoes. But trust me, they have perfected them over the years! If you visit in summer, expect a queue, so plan accordingly.

La Nueva Espuela

Homemade tapas and daily specials. A bit outside the town center, but totally worth it! They serve a three-course set menu at a very reasonable price. Try a traditional stew like meatballs in tomato sauce.

La Granadina

Located in the Canela neighborhood, this charming restaurant serves fresh fish grilled over a huge barbecue. The tuna, sea bream, and grilled sardines are my top picks, best enjoyed with an ice-cold beer. Don’t expect luxury—its simplicity is what makes it special. Sit on the terrace and enjoy the refreshing sea breeze.

Chiringuito III

Perfect for a special occasion! Treat yourself to a seafood rice dish, either the traditional version or the unique anchovy rice (nothing like the Portuguese version!). Their fresh fish, seafood, and meats are also outstanding. Don’t miss the crab salad and homemade desserts. Located in Punta del Moral, where every restaurant guarantees top-quality food.

Gourmet Spots

Delicatessen Merkajamón

More than just a shop—it’s an experience! Hanging hams, the aroma of cured meats, and walls lined with Spanish wines make this a must-visit for food lovers.

Alimentación Orta Ultramarinos

A historic grocery store that has kept its traditional tavern charm. You can also buy high-quality Spanish products like cured meats and rare liquors. My favorite plan? Sitting in their patio under the lemon tree, sipping a Ribera del Duero wine, and enjoying a plate of Spanish cheeses.
